Description:The piece entitled “There’s A Great, Big, Beautiful Tomorrow” is an exploration of historical visions and predictions of the future. Strongly founded in the optimistic views of the post WWII nuclear era, this report touches on futuristic visions in the media, art and architecture. The title of the piece derives from the theme song of Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress, which was featured at the 1964 New York World’s Fair.

To tie in this extensive report along with a visual layout, I created an eighteen-page booklet that illustrates visual examples while not distracting away from the content. The choice in layout is straight forward and the iconic images that pull together the spreads work confidently with the text. Throughout the book, radiating lines flow from futuristic icons such as The Skylark of Space and the observation towers from the 1964 New York World’s Fair. These radiating lines represent the ideas that spread from our imaginations, striving to reach the impossible.

The overall aesthetic of the book conjures up nostalgic imagery and provides an in depth look into the history of our future. As an individual who is intrigued by history and the capabilities of the human imagination, this book has offered a chance for my research-based design to flourish.

Description:Smucker’s is a North American manufacturer of fruit spreads, ice cream toppings, health and natural foods, beverages, shortening, and natural peanut butter, dating back to 1897. When redesigning a number of products from the Smucker’s Pure Jam line, I intended for the design to truly and uniquely portray the essence of quality and traditions based on the company’s ideals in a new and innovative way.

Ideally, customers should be persuaded to purchase a product by its essence, and not simply by its label. This especially matters when it comes to a company that prides itself on excellent quality. Many consumers have experienced the growing, picking and preparation of fruit for spreads; in remembering the ease at which one can recognize the colours, textures and smells associated with the cooking process of jam, I created a design that emphasizes the jam itself.

After experimenting with die-cuts and windows that exposed the natural colours of the jam, I discovered that reversing this effect actually exposed more of the jam to the consumer. I recreated a silkscreen effect to contrast the rich natural colours of the jam and moved away from traditional label systems used by many competitors. Many rival companies and products embrace the use of photographic and illustrative images of fruits to give the consumer a taste of what the product offers. To break away from this conventional style and allow Smucker’s to stand out when positioned on a grocery shelf, I depicted the fruits as icons. These white icons stand out clearly on the background colours of the jam, yet do not take away from the distinct colours and textures seen through the glass jars.

Overall, the design portrays a rich and elegant aesthetic that stands out from competitors and retains the quality that is associated with the Smucker’s brand.

Description:During my internship at Subplot Design Inc in the summer of 2008, I created multiple concept designs for Okanagan Spring Brewery. Founded in 1985 and remaining as British Columbia’s most widely distributed craft beer, Okanagan Spring Brewery commissioned Subplot Design Inc. to lead a massive revolution of its identity system. The Okanagan Spring logo mark, retail packaging, and all collateral materials were rebranded to reposition its identity in BC’s competitive craft beer market. The new identity and packaging launched into the trade mid-August 2008.

These images are concepts for chalkboards, sandwich boards, mirrors and signage. The unique design of the new identity offered many graphic resources, inspiring interesting shapes and forms.

Description:Since 1844, the Markham Fair has evolved into one of the community’s most celebrated events. The fair continues to display the classic traditions and values that keep the collective memory thriving in all who participate. Redesigning this event allowed me to work on a wide range of projects including posters, tickets, brochures, and event marker designs.

This project required extensive personal research involving observing the fair, its events, and those who attended. To create a unified visual identity for the events, I attended the fair and documented its main attractions. Inspired by the old-fashioned sawmill located at the east entrance of the fair, the designs take on a nostalgic feel of a classic wood type printing press. The sawmill offers a rustic look at a craft long faded out of our memory. The fair caters to both young and old, as this approach is not age specific, drawing interest from a wide demographic.

Press:After four years of the York University/Sheridan College Joint Program in Design, my career as a design student ended with the 2009 Graduate Show, Wonderlust. From May 10-12, at the Steamwhistle Brewery, 105 graduating students and I displayed our work to friends, family and members of the industry. After nine months of planning our final year of study came to a quick end in only three days.

I was lucky enough to be elected as a Co-Executive of Identity along with Rafael Ruiz. We looked over the entire visual aesthetic of the show as designed by the amazing 6 committees under us consisting of over 30 students. The 3 days consisted of a Family and Friends Night and an Industry Night, where I was fortunate to be a Master of Ceremonies. The show ran like clockwork due to all the pre-planning by the graduating class, and will forever be a highlight of my university career.

Description:Typewriting Time is a counting leader composed of sequences of an antique typewriter typing out numbers counting down from ten to two. The video is inspired by classic film noir cinema. The antique typewriter offers great images and sounds; everything the viewer sees and hears is authentic.
